Sweet & sublime as always! SVT's 2012 St. Lucia telecast from Uppsala Cathedral -with Astrid Cederlöf as Lucia- was loaded with Swedish goodness, including ABBA's Benny Andersson on piano and Helen Sjöholm singing; There's no substitute for such sheer genius & talent!

The sweetness and the utter simplicity never disappoints.
Church choirs singing traditional Lucia and Christmas carols, the reading of the Lucia text, and as always, all done with no self-conscious showboating or self-congratulatory displays -and no distracting applause from the audience.
All done in one hour.

Above and below, my screenshots of 14-year old Astrid Cederlöf as Lucia.

By now, after a few years of watching this, and having gotten into the swing of how things go, there are certain songs that are always performed that are now so familiar to me that I can already hear the upcoming refrain, chorus or key musical notes even before the chyron disappears from the TV screen.
Correct, like hearing the first few notes of an ABBA or Beatles song.

To me, this year's telecast seemed much more subdued than the previous two Luciamorgon telecasts.
Whether that was the plan or just the way it all worked out, I can't say, but it did seem like there was noticeably less energy in the room, maybe almost too subdued.
Was it because I already knew that this year's telecast was NOT LIVE as the last two had been, where anything done LIVE always offers up the possibility of something interesting and unexpected happening?

Or maybe it was just because yours truly was already pretty tired and stayed-up all night thru to watch the telecast, which was 1 a.m. Eastern my time that Thursday morning, 7 o'clock in Uppsala.

When that opening framing scene outside Uppsala Cathedral came onscreen, it looked SO very dark and very cold!
I practically shivered vicariously when it came on and I thought about how mornings like that can make you exhausted even before the day begins.
Thoughts of warm tomato soup and soup crackers went thru my head.

This is what it looked like outside the Cathedral in Uppsala an hour later, at 8 a.m., looking more like 6 p.m. in Bloomington, Indiana, about mid-January.

The above was short and sweet, but still my favorite from that day!

The video of the entire telecast is on SVT Play's website for another 28 days, as of today, then will be permanently deleted.

As usual, the SVT audio and video quality is amazing, so be sure to click the opposing arrows in the far right corner of the video and hit fullskärm to enable the full screen,
And be sure to watch for Olle Moraeus on the violin.

My last two blog posts on the Lucia telecasts by SVT were:

2011 St. Lucia Day in Göteborg is an hour away on SVT; will they strike gold and be sublime yet again?

As a bit of a Lucia bonus, here's a short video of some kids in a Lucia procession who made their way out to the glass cage in the Great Square in Malmö, Gustav Adolf Squarewhere   this year's Musikhjälpen took place two weeks ago, and where Robyn famously performed in 2010, as I wrote at the time.

#MUSLIMRAGE - 2010 video is perfect follow-up to my last post on problems associated with Muslim immigration to Sweden, inc. inability or unwillingness to adopt Western norms re free speech, are proven in video thru use of heckler's veto to stop performance, attack caricaturist Lars Vilks in Uppsala

BeTheBalls video: The Muslim attack on noted Swedish caricaturist Lars Vilks in Uppsala, Sweden 2010 - "the Entire Event". Uploaded May 27, 2010. http://youtu.be/lbpyk1uHNWY
Be sure to watch the woman in the second row wearing the multi-colored sweater, holding cell phone. This was captured by the TV operation of newspaper Upsala Nya Tidning in Uppsala.

I knew that I had the links to this video somewhere saved in Draft on my Gmail account, it's just that it wasn't yesterday when I really needed it to buttress my points in my blog post that eventually got around to the subject of Muslim immigrants' assimilation in Sweden, which is not going so well, owing mostly to the fact that many new refugees, mostly male, think they can out-smart the system that demands they make an honest effort to do several things, including adopting the norms of the country they're now living in, not being held hostage to the ones of the country they left behind in the rear-view mirror.
re Fouad Ajami's Washington Post essay: Why is the Muslim world so easily offended?; What Muslim "moderates"?; Målmo as the European canary-in-the-coal-mine doesn't auger well for the success of Muslim "moderates" or assimilation efforts; #MUSLIMRAGE
http://www.hallandalebeachblog.blogspot.com/2012/09/re-fouad-ajamis-washington-post-essay.html

This 2010 video of a rather shocking display of anti-democratic behavior by Muslims attending an event in Uppsala that I heard about a day or two after it first happened, serves as a friendly yet-chilling reminder that unlike authoritarian regimes in Muslim-controlled countries around the world, when you live in a real democracy, like the U.S. or Sweden, it doesn't mean that you have a right to NOT have your personal feelings or religious sensitivities hurt, nor do you have a right to prevent other citizens from exercising their guaranteed rights, like freedom of speech.

You can always choose to not attend events that will be upsetting, but you get the sense in watching the video that the whole thing was almost pre-meditated if not pre-ordained, given the reaction that you can see for yourself.

Unfortunately, as we have seen for the past week with respect to the protests/riots in Egypt and Libya, and the premeditated murder of the U.S. Ambassador to Libya, this concept of tolerance continues to elude both many Muslims who leave the Middle East, as well as ones who stay there and who seem to go out of their way to continuously be outraged.

That's made worse by many in the American Mainstream Media who ought to know better, but who instead of dealing with them realistically, and call them on what they say and do, instead, coddle them, like ABC News' Christiane Amanpour, wife of a former Clinton State Dept. spokesman, Jamie Rubin, now an executive editor at Bloomberg News.

YouTube fame straight from the heart of Uppsala: 'Cottage Cheese Girls' channel Robyn's "Tell Your Girlfriend" with a clever hook

YouTube fame straight from the heart of Uppsala: 'Cottage Cheese Girls' channel Robyn's "Tell Your Girlfriend" with a clever hook

SVT video: Kesotjejerna gör succé (Cottage Cheese Girls Succeed)
SVT Uppland reporter Bernt Hermerle describes the tale of how one ad hoc decision -to turn on a video-cam- during an otherwise boring Wednesday night led to YouTube fame and international media attention for AMANDA WIKSTRÖM, PETRA BROHÄLL and EBBA LOVISA ANDERSSON.

I originally saw them sing on Thursday when I found myself on SVT's website looking for something else entirely.
Not finding what I was looking for, I clicked on some of the recent news videos, in this case, Wednesday's edition of Sverige Idag (Sweden Today).
After watching it for a bit I started fast-forwarding and eventually got to the last segment.
And then at the 22:04 mark, I saw something that I was completely unprepared for.
For about 45 seconds I was dumb-struck

Three talented and clever women from an Uppsala band called Erato had turned their boredom one night into a YouTube phenomena... a phenomena that I had heard nothing about, which is strange.
I mean, how many Swedish YouTube sensations can there be at any one time, right? Especially, a capella?

On Friday morning, I saw that Damian over at his very popular blog, SwedishStereo, had also posted something about the girls which I completely agree with: http://swedishstereo.blogspot.com/2011/10/erato-call-your-girlfriend.html

I'd actually received his post Thursday, but literally as I pulled his post up, I got a surprise phone call from someone with a great political tip I need to follow-up on, so... this post is at least 24 hours late.

The original caught LIVE...

Robyn - Call Your Girlfriend - Live at Skellefteå 2011, July 1, 2011.

Robyn performance above was recorded at a concert in northern Sweden by a Robyn fan whom I've referred to here on the blog simply as "Sofia from Umeå," and her very interesting YouTubeChannel is at http://www.youtube.com/user/Hia80
