#Euro2012 -Video of BBC's controversial edition of Panorama titled, "Euro 2012 Stadiums of Hate" on the rampant violence, racism & anti-Semitism at football matches in Poland and Ukraine that has inflamed millions; Sol Campbell urges fans to "stay away"; BBC's response to criticism of program

BBC's Panorama "Stadiums of Hate" May 28, 2012.
http://youtu.be/E0f259wCerY

I actually meant to post this controversial video of the May 28th broadcast of the BBC's investigative program Panorma in my last post early this morning about the racist outbursts from the crowd -a minority of the 25,000 there to be sure- at the Dutch training session in Poland on Thursday, but perhaps it's for the best that it now has its own post.

Yesterday, the BBC posted this clip on their website from former England captain Sol Campbell's criticism of Poland and Ukraine being selected as co-hosts for Euro 2012 before they showed they're capable of running something like this BEFORE they've got a firm handle on the overt racism and anti-Semitism present at football matches in their countries, has really riled millions in the two countries, as well as Poles and Ukrainians living in Great Britain.
But many have agreed with his analysis that they weren't worthy in the first place, given  how self-evident the problems STILL are.

Today on the BBC's website, the show's editor, Tom Giles, has posted his response to criticisms of the program on their "The Editors" blog, which I happen to subscribe to:

'Stadiums of Hate': Legitimate and fair
By Tom Giles
18:28 UK time, Friday, 8 June 2012
When an investigative current affairs programme like Panorama broadcasts a programme called Euro 2012: Stadiums of Hate 11 days before a major football tournament and which reveals shocking images of racist abuse and violence in the host countries - controversy is to be expected.

Tears soon to be flowing like rivers: Robin Gibb remains near death in a coma in a west London hospital, just days after his 'Titanic Requiem' premiered at Westminster Central Hall on Tuesday.
My last two posts on Robin Gibb both appeared last year, February 12, 2011 and were titled:

a.) Robin Gibb on the sad state of pop music -a lot of karaoke!- and raising $ for the RAF Bomber Command Memorial, on BBC's HARDtalk with Stephen Sackur
http://hallandalebeachblog.blogspot.com/2011/02/robin-gibb-on-sad-state-of-pop-music.html

b.) Robin Gibb and Carola sing "How Deep Is Your Love" on SVT's "Skavlan"; 20-minute interview also!
http://hallandalebeachblog.blogspot.com/2011/02/robin-gibb-and-carola-sing-how-deep-is.html

I urge you to read them and learn more about this amazingly creative and caring man.

One of my favorite record albums that I brought with me from North Miami Beach to IU in the Fall of 1979 and just loved to play -and show-off a bit- whether I was living in my dorm room at Briscoe Quad or in my apt., was an album that friends of a certain musical sophistication never tired of listening to, in large part because no matter where they were from -Fort Wayne, Chicago, Long Island, Kansas City, London, Oman, Santa Monica- they had never heard any of the songs before.

It was great to be the person who had the rarity, which in this case, was an album compilation I'd been given by someone I knew who was a British music producer which consisted of the most-popular songs recorded by The Bee Gees while they were growing-up in Australia, of which this song below is one.

For my friends and I, that album was like the Rosetta Stone of pop music of the previous 25 years, because it gave you an early look at the sounds, rhyming schemes, singing patterns and vocal dering-do of the Brothers Gibb that the world would soon come to know and try to copy once they moved back to Great Britain and began getting international attention.

More importantly, that album gave you the key to unlocking a better understanding of their true genius. And no matter how old the song was or how old they were when recording it, or even sometimes how good or corny the song might really be, there was always that melody and harmony.
ALWAYS!

Today, Robin Gibb and his extended family are very much in our thoughts and prayers in this very trying time.

Looter who started the infamous Croyden fire during last August's riots, which resulted in the destruction of the iconic 144-year old, family-run Reeves furniture shop, causing damages of £3m, has been jailed for 11-and-a-half years

BBC News video - 2011 Croydon riots arson case: Trevor and Graham Reeves comment on the sentencing of Gordon Thompson and losing the town icon - 'Losing shop like a bereavement' April 11, 2012. http://youtu.be/hrZH5dAA3tg

Gordon Thompson, the looter who started the infamous Croyden fire during last early August's riots in England, which resulted in the destruction of the iconic 144-year old, family-run House of Reeves furniture shop, causing damages of £3m, has been jailed for 11-and-a-half years.
No word on whether he will be prosecuted for the two fires he started at other stores before setting a sofa afire at the House of Reeves shop in south London, which consists of a series of shops on the block.

This is the logical follow-up to my August 9th post of last year, titled, Listening to BBC's 5 live Breakfast reports LIVE from Croyden reporting on rioting aftermath; www.riotcleanup.co.uk

That post featured these two videos:

Channel 4 News (U.K.) Monday's 7 p.m. newscast: Police braced as clashes erupt across London http://bcove.me/j4tah6mb
And this was before the fires in Croyden later that night.

Croydon: on the edge of riot, http://youtu.be/crSATCwwUYk

Eight months ago I mentioned having heard for myself on-air via 5 live the mournful words of
A woman who owns a maternity boutique described seeing her life's dream literally going up in smoke, finding small hangers on nearby streets that had fallen from the clothes that were stolen. The hangers got in the way of how much they could carry out.
If you've gone back to read the that post from last year, and I strongly suggest you do, then I'm here to tell you now that my own thoughts then are the same as they are now with respect to the Labour Party's mis-guided notions that simply "communicating" with society's have-nots was the things that was missing. It wasn't.
Some people can never accept the fact that their high-minded approach, however well motivated, has failed, which the last three nights has thoroughly proven. Or recognize that some people are, in fact, criminals.

Trending at Hallandale Beach Blog: Pressure cooking with celebrity chef Andrew Nutter

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00qh5b1

Celebrity chef Andrew Nutter visited the newly-opened BBC MediaCity in Salford late  Monday afternoon his time to talk about the time-saving benefits of pressure cooking and the intense tastes that emerge. I happened to be among those listening closely - via my computer- to his interview by BBC Radio 5 live Drive's Peter Allen and Anna Foster, who described the tastes that Andrew had prepared for them to nibble on in the studio via some pressure-cooked food.
Having heard this discussion on Monday afternoon, I couldn't wait to see if there was a vid for it to see how it actually looked -success!

Wrong again! Swiss voters disappoint pro-chaos & confusion European news media predictions re Swiss People's Party, who remain THE most popular party

Euronews video: Despite losses in Swiss election, rightist People's Party remains largest party in country

Wrong again! Swiss voters disappoint pro-chaos & confusion European news media predictions re Swiss People's Party, who remain THE most popular party

Once again, as they did with the French and British elections, the U.S. Mainstream Media's print and electronic cousins in Europe tried to write the headline for a story before the election took place, with the result that they got caught with their pants down again when voters didn't play their parts as vox populi puppets, and do exactly what the news media said they'd do.
As for instance in The Telegraph: Swiss far-right party SVP aiming to make election history

Yes, I hear hear there's a lot of that going around...

Predictably, the BBC, after-the-fact, says rather arrogantly,
"Voters know many Swiss businesses, and their health service, depend on foreign workers, our correspondent says."
Yes, but Helvetia depended upon them just as much before, where previous elections resulted in the People's Party gaining some seats they have now apparently lost.

Time for the news media to work on getting a more accurate list of excuses and alibis for why their elections predictions -with matching horror stories about the Right- failed once again to come true.

When you read the BBC story below, you'll see that the key fact that the People's Party remains the largest in the entire country with 25.9%, one-third larger than the Socialist Party after the election, doesn't get mentioned until the last paragraph, instead of the first where it belongs.
Sort of makes you think they almost hated to mention it.

The BBC story -and likely any story you see about this election in the next few days in U.S. newspapers- also doesn't mention the germane fact that prior to the weekend election, the People's Party had THE largest percentage of the vote in Switzerland since the current system went into effect 92 years ago.

So answer me this question, in a modern, multi-ethnic, multi-lingual country like Switzerland, how exactly does the European news media get away with continuing to say that THE most-popular party is outside of the mainstream?
They are the mainstream.

An Open Letter to Gwyneth Paltrow

Dear Gwyneth,

Imagine my surprise when I received the June issue of Bon Appetit, and instead of a strawberry rhubarb pie or a luscious summer salad, your face was staring back at me, offering me a bite of spaghetti. The magazine called you “food’s newest face” and described you as a cookbook author.

Really?

Gwyneth Paltrow & Huey Lewis - Cruisin' (from Duets, 2000, directed by Bruce Paltrow)

http://youtu.be/bv9CVuNRgCo

Monday afternoon for about the tenth time, I saw Blythe Danner in 1776 airing on Turner Classic Movies, a film based on the Tony Award-winning play. She plays Thomas Jefferson's (Ken Howard) wife who has come to Philadelphia at the secret behest of John Adams (William Daniels) in order to prevent Jefferson from leaving for Virginia to be with her, after he has been tasked with drafting what turns out to be the Declaration of Independence, even as there is no assurance that the majority of the delegates to the Constitutional Convention WILL vote for independence.

The natural conflict of the film is the same as it was 235 years ago, and is fought with great wit, sarcasm and outright personal animosity as the elected delegates debate whether or not the 13 British colonies should declare their independence from Great Britain, or stand pat, even while
Gen. Washington and his out-manned, ragtag Continental Army are fleeing New York City as the British Army under Gen. Howe invade.

The British intention
: conquering and dividing, in this case, to march thru New York and then finally cut New England off from the rest of the colonies and any supplies, and then, finally wipe-out the colonial rebels once and for all.

Watching and listening to the Royal Wedding of Prince William & Kate Middleton via BBC-TV and Radio's 5live

On the 5 live website yesterday, I spotted a very interesting video in which former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond "explains what life as a Princess for Kate Middleton could be like."

You can see it here, along with some other Royal Wedding related videos:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/5live/bestbits/

Above, my screen-shot of David Furnish and Elton John at Westminster Abbey around 10:05 a.m. looking around at the impressive scene all around them.
This morning, as planned, I'm listening to BBC Radio 5 live's coverage of the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton -the future Duke & Duchess of Cambridge- and watching the BBC-TV's worldwide coverage, the latter of which I'm watching on the local Miami PBS affiliate, WPBT, Channel 2.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/5live/#two

http://www.bbc.co.uk/

5 live's Victoria Derbyshire, Richard Bacon and Gabby Logan are hosting the coverage on the radio side and have already been mentioning some good factoids, anecdotes and stories of a sort that American reporters flown over to London for the occasion couldn't possibly know or tell as well, which is one of the reasons that I'm observing the wedding this way, and not watching the U.S. TV networks.

More of those factoids are here from Channel 4 News:

And if you didn't already know, the nasty business with the Syrian Amb. to Great Britain and the Royal wedding invite has been resolved -he's out!

SERVICE REVEALED
St James’ Palace, which is the official residence of the bridegroom's father - has issued an order of service for tomorrow’s proceedings which it boldly claims to be “the epitome of Britishness'. Look out NASCAR! The monkeys at Longleat Safari Park in Wiltshire have a car of their own to play with -they're 'grease monkeys' AND quick learners!

Look out NASCAR!

The Rhesus macaques at Longleat Safari Park in Wiltshire
have a car of their own to play with -they're 'grease monkeys' AND quick learners!

And their sponsors love them -or rather, will.

http://www.longleat.co.uk/

While they have learned how to keep making left-hand turns for 500 miles and how to pull into the correct spot in the pit-stop, there are certain things they still haven't quite caught on to, but give it some time.

For one, they haven't quite figured out how to do the celebratory donut in the infield after the race, an obligatory move in this day and age.

And most importantly for any professional automobile driver, they STILL haven't figured out how to start every post-race interview by thanking their sponsors and mentioning each one in declining order of financial investment.

Next year at Bristol and Martinsville!

I should also add that like me, other than at the Indy 500 or the Daytona 500, races with real tradition, the monkeys in Wiltshire see little value in having military flyovers at automobile races.
If it seems silly to them, imagine how it seems to those of us who can can add the taxpayer dollars involved...

I should mention here that one monkey wanted to put a Miami Dolphins pennant clip on his back window while still another wanted to put a bumper sticker on the back of the Mercedes that read "My child is a Honor Student at Jim Notter High School", but I talked them out of it.

While you're in the area, you may even want to visit a place that's even more famous, Stonehenge, which is why a friend is fond of saying, "Come for the Monkeys, Stay for the Druids."

Emotional Terry picks up pieces

By Phil McNulty
16:41 UK time, Tuesday, 22 March 2011

John Terry's bleary eyes betrayed a sleepless night and maybe even a hint of the "overwhelming" emotion of reclaiming the England captain's armband after Fabio Capello's brief address to his squad at London Colney.

Capello's reinstatement of Terry has met with a mixed reception, and the man who lost the honour 13 months ago amid claims about his private life admits he will not be "everybody's cup of tea" after replacing Rio Ferdinand.

I've been listening to lots of BBC 5 live the past two weeks, getting reacquainted with some voices, sounds and mental images that for awhile had been part of my daily routine, but which changed when I had to work on a project that was taking up a lot of my time.

I've been hearing some very interesting quotes, comments and interviews about Saturday's England at Wales UEFA Euro 2012 Qualifier in Cardiff, which will be starting about 11 a.m. Miami time, as well as the continuing saga of John Terry's quest for redemption, that, if it were about the NFL, people would say, "Wow, THAT's some interesting stuff!"
Like the way the current NFL Films videos of weekly 'miked' sidelines sound -a depth and context you're not used to.
http://msn.foxsports.com/foxsoccer/euro2012qualifying

But because it's about English and European football, and there's not a lot of people hereabouts who share that interest, I don't really have a friendly venue for sharing what I've heard with any locals. Unlike the case in Arlington at Summer's Restaurant, the sports bar/restaurant I frequently went to catch Dolphin games on satellite hosted televised Premier League and Serie A matches on Fox Soccer Channel right before the NFL throngs poured in and the great TV switching and game info signs were hooked up.
American Football in one door, European Football out the other.

http://www.summers-restaurant.com/
http://msn.foxsports.com/foxsoccer

I actually listened to John Terry's press conference Tuesday afternoon via my computer, which, quite literally, sounded like it was next door, so I could hear the extraneous chatter, the moving about in the back of the room and could literally feel the anxiety from thousands of miles away.
There are a lot of smart people who think this decision by Fabio Capello is absolutely dreadful, and a like amount who think it's overdue, and in any case, was NOT playing-related and thus more a media-created controversy than a genuine one.

It's my understanding that it was originally scheduled for Friday up in Cardiff at the team hotel, but was moved-up to tamp down media speculation that Terry regaining the captaincy was sure to create fault lines within the team.
http://www.livesoccertv.com/news/3200/wales-vs-england-bellamy-doesn-t-know-me-well-enough-says-terry/
http://msn.foxsports.com/foxsoccer/euro2012qualifying/story/England-star-Crouch-denies-unrest-over-Terry-leadership

It remains to be seen whether that press conference will keep lips sealed.
Personally, given the circumstances of what's happned, the scrutiny that will only increase and the fact that many reporters simply don't like Terry, I'm doubtful.

Saturday's match will be on ESPN 2 in the U.S. at 10:55 a.m. Eastern, and can also be seen on ESPN3.com.

Libya may change in 24-36 hours; WSJ's Alan Murray, social media expert Clay Shirky on effect of Facebook, Twitter, et al in revolts in Egypt, Africa

Facebook and Twitter Are Changing the Middle East 2/18/2011 9:42:59 AM
In an interview with WSJ's Alan Murray, social media expert Clay Shirky discusses the effect of Facebook, Twitter and other social media in the recent uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia, and what it could mean for the Middle East at large.

http://online.wsj.com/video/shirky-facebook-and-twitter-speed-up-revolutions/E0BAA515-5056-4F4A-AC5E-C684BADE46CA.html

When Clay Shirky speaks, very smart people with resources and connections listen -and so should you!
He believes that Libya is the next domino to fall... ker-plunk!

Pull-quote from the Shirky interview: "Governments are NOT afraid of informed individuals, they're afraid of informed synchronous groups.

Libya teetering on the brink of great change...
I've been listening intently this morning to the 6 a.m. BBC World Service World Today broadcast and have heard a fascinating interview with a Libyan-born expert in the U.S. who actually knows Colonel Qadafi and his son,
Sayf.

Following a BBC correspondent's report from Tripoli, scene of so much violence this weekend, and even now, the scene of sustained gunfire, the expert in the U.S. being interviewed was quite negative about the speech
Qadhafi's son made today on Libyan TV, and what he characterized as the very strange behavior he exhibited.

He said that Libyan people would not respond well to the behavior or words, esp, his wild gesticulations during the speech as well as the very threatening manner, which made it seem like it had not been rehearsed.

Almost like the first time he saw it was when he was reading it.

Hmm-m...

See it for yourself.

BBC
video of excerpts of
Sayf al-Islam Qadafi speech:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-12520550

The situation is moving very, very rapidly...
How will Libya transition into next phase of development
?

Another expert said that it's his sense of things that with the eastern part of the country basically opting out of central control, Qadafi will be out of Libya within the next 24-36 hours because the army and police are starting to realize that they have no future if he is around.

He no longer is able to control things and "the genie is out and can't be put back into the lamp
."

Facts on Libya at the
CIA Factbook:
https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/ly.html

The Channel 4 News Snowmail that I received by email on Sunday afternoon, written by
Krishnan Guru-Murthy, said as follows on Libya:

LIBYA

The Libya uprising is showing its differences and difficulties. While Tunisia, Egypt and Bahrain have been playing out on television cameras, amateur video, mobile phones and Twitter the Libyan protests are much harder to follow. International journalists have not managed to get in the way they did with the others. Access to the internet is restricted, and websites such as YouTube which can upload video, and social networks seem to be disrupted. However the phones still work so we have been gathering testimony the old fashioned pre-internet way. Amid reports of hundreds of people now killed in the protests in and around Benghazi there is clearly huge determination by the demonstrators. We spoke to one man there who told us "A lot of people are dying in the streets. There are a lot of cars with troops from outside Libya, I think they are Nigerian, from African countries. They have guns and they shoot anyone they find on the streets...From the eastern part of Libya, the protesters have received some heavy artillery, they haven’t used it yet – they're telling us they are going to now. Nobody knows the number (of dead) because there are many hospitals – they go to four or five different hospitals. Most of them are being shot by snipers, from far away in the head or the chest by Africans. Most of them don’t speak good Arabic, they speak French." Obviously there is no way for us to check these claims on the snipers but they give you a good idea of what the talk is going around the protesters at least. Heavy gunfire could be heard in the background and the man had to break off to shout at friends to get inside.

And it is clear Tripoli is far from calm too. We spoke to a woman there who told us "I live in the east side of Tripoli but I cannot go out. My husband went out this morning, he said the streets were empty, people were scared. So I said, ok let my son go to the store but my son – he didn’t come back and I hear from people – I call them and they say why did you send him? People have gone to the court – I hope he didn’t go there because he’s young and very nervous. For two days I kept him in the house but I hope he didn’t go there. Oh my goodness, there’s something happening now – they are shooting I’m sorry I have to go.". So we are gathering what we can, and will have the latest. We will also be discussing what the West can and should do about Libya. The US ambassador Louis Susman was pretty unsubtle in a diplomatic way this morning with Andrew Marr - it was clear he thinks Britain has been wrong to deal with Gadaffi in a way that makes him seem like a legitimate leader.

Here are the two news segments they aired last night on Libya.
