Why has there been NOTHING of any real value in #Miami/#SoFL news media in MONTHS regarding the #HollywoodBeach Broadwalk shooting victims, who have emotional scars as well as physical scars? What's the status of the prosecution's case vs. Jordan Burton, Ariel Cardahn Paul, and Lionel Jean-Charles Jr., none of whom -surprise!- were choir boys? When is the larger public going to be told... something? 😒

Yes, the truth is that sometimes, the blog posts here at Hallandale Beach/Hollywood Blog just literally write themselves. Really.

Especially when the issues involved are what's clearly the rapidly-declining caliber of South Florida news journalism, the touchy subject of crime and how it is reported, and the larger issue of what is actually reported and sees the light of day with airtime or column inches, AND, what goes completely unmentioned or unremarked upon by reporters, editors, columnists, anchors and news directors for days, weeks, months or years.

That is, until some offhand comment at a public meeting or party is overheard, or you or someone you trust shares what they came across at random via the Twitter feed of some reporter or columnist who drops a line about something.

Then, suddenly you are reminded of a news story and crime story that has simply fallen so far below the radar, that you almost forget that when it happened, it was not just the #1 story everywhere here, but the #1 lead story on all the U.S. TV network newscasts, and then amplified by news media all around the world

Millions and millions of people know about that shooting that happened in a place where you live and I live and took place at a spot that you and I have been, hundreds if not thousands of times.

To be honest, I have been thinking about this post of today for, literally, months. And while I've written a few paragraphs down in my comp book, I refrained from posting those words last month or last week, I've actually waited patiently -not always my strong suit- actually hoping for a change that that my own usually insightful and accurate intuition or surmise of the situation would prove to be wrong, and that some local South Florida journo, maybe even someone I know and have spoken to before,  would rise to the occasion and do what I thought was necessary.

But no.... that has NOT happened.

I'm sure that nobody who is reading this blog post wants to believe that a responsible news director or reporter at one of one of the four English language TV stations in South Florida, or an honest editor or reporter at the Miami Herald or the South Florida Sun Sentinel would intentionally NOT want to cover and write about a legitimate news story -and NOT do so in a timely, honest and accurate fashion, right?

Surely things can't be THAT bad in South Florida, right?

Uh... Maybe they are and maybe many of you just don't want to acknowledge that fact publicly.

Especially when to believe that would necessarily tend to confirm the already negative stereotypes or optics in the heads of so many angry and skeptical South Florida residents about the subject of crime, and why it happens, regardless of the viewer/reader's age, gender or race.

Here's why I mention that...

As of today, Friday December 15th., it's been over six (6) months since the Memorial Day mass shooting on the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk that injured nine (9) people. Seven of whom were innocent bystanders just minding their own business along the 1200 block of N. Broadwalk in Hollywood.

Many of the victims were young kids, out with their parents that afternoon, enjoying the sights and people-watching there, just as I have been doing since I was a kid when my parents and two younger sisters and I moved to the area in 1968 from Memphis.

Why has there been NOTHING of any real value in #Miami/#SoFL news media universe in MONTHS regarding the #HollywoodBeach Broadwalk shooting victims,  who have emotional scars as well as physical scars? How, exactly, are their Hanukkah/Christmas holidays going?

What's the status right now of the prosecution's case vs. Jordan Burton, Ariel Cardahn Paul, and  Lionel Jean-Charles Jr., none of whom -surprise!- were choir boys?

When is the larger public going to be told... something? 😒

Reality is starting to sink-in for The Related Group. #HollywoodFL residents and stakeholders really DO hate their absurd plan to build a 30-story luxury condo tower for multi-millionaires on PUBLIC land at Hollywood Beach. An energized public is prepared to make life miserable for any Hollywood elected official or city employee who tries to change the ambiance of that quiet, natural area of the beach.

In a few moments, you'll have the chance to read for yourself the 4 complete media accounts of what took place at last Wednesday's Hollywood City Commission regarding The Related Group's ridiculous plan, and some things for all of us to remember in advance of the next meeting on this subject, on Wednesday March 16th, the day before St. Patrick's Day.

That'll necessarily include many smart, dumb, inarticulate, curious and incurious comments from our local elected officials, including two truly great "money" quotes, which make it seem like at least some of them were living in two completely separate worlds, no?

In one world, a cold-hearted look at the facts-on-the-ground where logic meets reason, the other, a kind of fantasy story that depends upon unicorns, dragons and a collective sense of amnesia among the citizens of this community, wherein, for the benefit of the developer, we all forget everything we have personally seen and witnessed first-hand with real estate development on Hollywood Beach the past 15-20 years.

"Do we sell our soul for just money?" Shuham asked. "Once we sign it, we're stuck. We don't get to walk away from this. This contract is not a good deal."

Commissioner Traci Callari, stating she had planned to vote yes on the deal, blasted Shuham for making the city "look like a fool" by airing her concerns at the 11th hour, in public.

Hmmm.. could it be because Comm. Shuham could NOT legally talk about it with her or any other commissioners if Shuham wanted to stay on the right side of Florida's  Sunshine Laws, so often ignored in South Florida city halls, and a subject that I've written about dozens of times over the past 14 years here on my blog, Hallandale Beach/Hollywood Blog?

Yes. Something that Callari should know something about given that she was recently the President of the Broward League of Cities, the Broward politico lobbying group that over the years has received hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars from Broward citizens to employ attorneys and consultants to further their power grab in Tallahassee and continue to put citizens, taxpayers and Small Business owners at a further disadvantage, while trying to carve out more power and privileges for politicos.

I also wanted to single out those of you who have been telling me for years that I made a real mistake a few years ago when I decided to be more open-minded to what Comm. Callari said, and that I would judge her in the future by her words AND actions, and not just her often hostile or antagonistic attitude towards citizens or common sense or both.
You all are looking more and more correct right now, given what Comm. Callari said in front of everyone at the public meeting.

There's really no need to impugn her, since all we have to do is take her at her word that she REALLY believes the nonsense she spouted last Wednesday.
Yes, my days of giving her the benefit of the doubt are.. Gone With The Wind.

And for the record, Comm. Callari caring whether the Hollywood City Commission looked "like fools" at that meeting is hardly a reasonable measurement barometer on this specific issue, given the fact that neither Mayor Josh Levy or Commissioner Callari or any of the other 5 members of the City Commission ever did the right thing over 19 very long months, and publicly chide The Related Group and their execs for Related's repeated, abject failure to meet with the community at an in-person meeting as required by the city's very own rules.
That's a very low bar to surpass, and yet...

Yes, a public meeting where the actual neighbors of such a prospective building could speak, much less, the rest of the Hollywood community -and the South Florida news media- that genuinely loves that quiet and natural ambiance, and who'll fight to ensure it stays that way, could look Related Group execs, attorneys, architect, and transportation consultants in the eye and ask them to defend what they claim, and then point out its many self-evident holes and flaws in logic.
Though a plan so devoid of logic and common sense, and which fails to properly judge both public sentiment and human behavior, will not suddenly transform in one month.

Just because the Hollywood City Commission itself, collectively, was not showing proper diligence -or any curiosity!- in their thinking and judgment, and instead chose to act more like cheerleaders for the plan, via their softball questions publicly for two years -save Comm. Shuham- doesn't mean that we could not throw fastballs at a public in-person meeting when we got the chance to let them know that this deal was NOT a fait accompli.

Or, as I said in my last blog post before last Wednesday's meeting, here:

By the way, again, for the record, the Miami Herald has said nothing about this preposterous, incompatible Related Group plan since they first sent word of their unsolicited bid to City Hall 19 months ago, and the city, in their failed decision-making process, decided that it was both a love letter and a promi$$ory note.
Nor has the Herald EVER mentioned Caryl Shuham by name since the day after she was elected on Nov. 6th, 2018. Really.

I checked and then double-checked their archives before I posted this.

Vote Delayed On Related Group's Controversial Condo Project
Deirdra Funcheon, Bisnow South Florida
February 3, 2022

At the end of a meeting that lasted from 5 p.m. Wednesday to 3 a.m. Thursday, city commissioners in Hollywood, Florida, delayed a vote on whether to allow Florida's most prominent condo developer to build a 30-story condominium on part of a taxpayer-owned, beachfront site that now includes a public park.

Commissioners are now scheduled to vote on March 16 whether to authorize city officials to execute a comprehensive agreement, a ground lease and easements between the city and PRH 1301 S Ocean Drive LLC, a subsidiary of The Related Group.

Hollywood delays vote on condo deal - Vice mayor skewers plan as too risky in marathon meeting

Susannah Bryan, South Florida Sun Sentinel
February 4, 2022

HOLLYWOOD - Go big or go home.

In the wee hours of Thursday morning, the folks who want a private 30-story condo built on a prized piece of taxpayer-owned beach in Hollywood went home without a deal.

But the proposal, skewered around the midnight hour by Vice Mayor Caryl Shuham, is not dead.

The commission agreed to resume discussions on March 16 to give city staff and The Related Group time to come up with a revised deal. The 5-2 vote came just before 3 a.m. Thursday, ending a marathon - and sometimes snippy - debate that began Wednesday afternoon.

The 10-hour meeting, compared by some to a filibuster, began with a two-hour presentation by city staff hyping the deal as a boon for Hollywood that could bring the city an estimated $1.4 billion over the course of a 99-year lease.

Hollywood puts off vote on condo on public land, but problems remain
February 4, 2022

Residents speak during a meeting at Hollywood City Hall on Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2022 to vote on the building of a condo tower on a section of taxpayer-owned beachfront land. John McCall/South Florida Sun-Sentinel/TNS

Hollywood is trying to make better a deal that the city can’t make good.

We have 10 hours of new evidence. That’s how long it took Wednesday night and Thursday morning for the city commission to discuss and hear comments on the proposed lease of oceanfront property to Related Group of Florida.

The company would build a 190-unit, 30-story condo on roughly one acre of the four-acre site. In return, Related would pay for a new, upgraded Harry Berry Park, a larger community center, a plaza and a sculpture garden. Hollywood officials say the project also would bring the city money from rent and increased property tax revenue.

After that marathon debate, the commission voted 5-2 to continue the discussion on March 16. Given the level of opposition, we’re doubtful that the city and Related can refashion the deal enough to gain more support.

Hollywood gets reality check on Related condo deal

By Randy Schultz
February 9, 2022

Caryl Shuham is not a prosecutor. But shortly before midnight last Wednesday, the Hollywood city commissioner delivered a forceful indictment.

For roughly 45 minutes, Shuham - a construction lawyer - picked apart the proposed deal under which Related Group of Florida would build a 30-story condo on a public oceanfront site in return for building a park and community center. Supporters call it a great example of public-private partnerships, known as P3s.

Such partnerships, however, must strike the proper balance between public and private. Shuham argued that the deal would have been very unfair to Hollywood. "It began on Related's terms" after the company approached the city, Shuham told me, and stayed there.

Shuham called the projected revenue to the city "speculative" because Related based it on inflated sales prices. The contract, she said, "guarantees nothing" to Hollywood. After Related sold the 190 units, the city would be dealing with a condo association. Nothing prevented the project from becoming rental.

"No one goes there nowadays, it's too crowded"

I miss the beach!

Some people you run into at the beach are friendly, nice, and Kara cute.
Some are not, of course, but in South Florida, the odds are that occasionally you can run into someone who is nice and Kara cute and prefers Chicago Deep Dish-style pizza, Ibsen and Strindberg, and peace, like me!
So why would you want to to be in the desert or in a canyon when you could be with someone like Kara at the beach?
The question answers itself.
End of lesson.

Now that I have your attentionin case you didn't know -and not many dothe City of Hollywood is interested in extending the city's iconic Broadwalk south to city line with Hallandale Beach.

(Or, should I say, pre-COVID19 they did.)
Hardly anyone in HB seems to know anything about it.

So far, despite hearing about everyone's general sense of malaise and boredom, alternating between simmering and overdrive, whether in my own neighborhood in Hollywood Hills or via local, national or British TV newscasts, I have not yet personally seen anyone walking around South Florida with shrubbery to hide behind in order to get somewhat closer to some area that's currently prohibited.

As is ACTUALLY happening in the UK -like something out of "Gilligan's Island"- as you can see from my tweet Saturday night to the ever-adorable Amy Kaufman, film and entertainment reporter at the LA Times, long one of our personal favorites, and best-selling author of "Bachelor Nation."

Which of these Beach personalities are you, via Cameron Dallas and his girlfriend Madisyn Nenchaca.

Last Friday, this was the not-so-happy state of affairs a week ago when my friends and I turned on local South Florida TV newscasts and saw something that lots of people in Hollywood, whether civic activists or regular citizens alike, were NOT at all happy about.

Correct, having to wait for Hollywood parks and recreational areas to reopen this past Wednesday when Hollywood re-acted AFTER many other local cities had given the okay for similar facilities under on their turf.

Trust me, I've received LOTS more angry and negative emails and phone calls from people I know and even from some new readers of the blog or my Twitter feed, than you'd know from what I've been tweeting about recently, including the bad, near-Ghost Town situation in Downtown Hollywood, sometimes even at 6:30 pm.

D-E-A-D.

"Why wasn't the City of Hollywood ready to go?," I keep getting asked over-and over.
But then I remind them that's more of a question for the Hollywood City Commission to explain and rationalize, no?

Image

Because I have a very good knowledge of how so many of the decisions and judgments around here are usually made, who and what gets considered, early on, I gave the benefit of the doubt to Hollywood city employees being extra... something.

What, dutiful?
Paying more attention to detail to make sure everything was as clean as could be before opening up?

But in this particular case, thus far, I have yet to hear any elected Hollywood official or anyone in the City Manager's office give a credible explanation for why it's taken Hollywood so much longer to get going on recreational sites.

And for those of you who don't live in the area, the context for all of the discontent here in Hollywood is that it opened some of its most popular parks on Wednesday MANY days after other nearby cities like Aventura and Fort Lauderdale did.
Class-conscious Aventura, typically, made people show ID, and only allowed Aventura residents into its parks, while Hollywood is not requiring IDs.

I'll be posting something here on the blog in the near-future based on those emails, phone calls I referenced earlier, plus many face-to-face talks with Downtown Hollywood stakeholders who, in some cases, feel like they've been abandoned and left to fend for their own, given how little they have seen from the Hollywood CRA and Hollywood Chamber of Commerce that was anything more than fluff and dross.

No, clearly not everyone is as calm and measured about this matter as my friend, Cat Uden, celebrated Stand Up Paddle Board aficionado and Hollywood civic activist for increased recreational activity along Hollywood Beach, and, not least, the South Florida Campaign Organizer for Oceana, focusing on ocean and coastal conservation.
And as you regular readers of the blog would know, articulate and enthusiastic Cat has been a subject of several fact and photo-filled blog posts the past two years, starting here:
http://hallandalebeachblog.blogspot.com/2019/01/so-proud-of-two-of-my-newer-friends.html

Here's an excerpt from Cat's interesting April 1st Instagram post that I thought of a lot the past 5 weeks, as one person in Hollywood after another told me of their personal displeasure with what was going on here, whether about the lack of access to the Broadwalk for exercise purposes, the closed parks, or what they feel is the city's short-sighted ideas/plans for rejuvenating Downtown Hollywood.

(I will be blogging about that subject later this week, as businesses in that part of the city have literally fallen off a cliff, with many concerned stakeholders I've spoken to the past two months saying that, even more than usual, they believe the Hollywood CRA and the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has behaved more like incurious spectators than active participants.

Lots of people are angry and not afraid to point fingers at the people they hold responsible.
And in an election year, that can have tangible consequences.)

Cat's full Instagram post is below this excerpt.

"I miss going to the beach in the mornings. I had accepted that it was necessary to close the beaches (because people were idiots and took advantage). Last week, I made the mistake of looking at the beach webcam, and when I saw the ocean was blue and flat and glassy and beautiful, I admit I cried for a good half hour. I miss going to the beach in the mornings. I had accepted that it was necessary to close the beaches (because people were idiots and took advantage). Last week, I made the mistake of looking at the beach webcam, and when I saw the ocean was blue and flat and glassy and beautiful, I admit I cried for a good half hour. But I’m not going to sit around and whine about my beach closure on social media or bug my elected officials. They have much bigger problems right now. Have you seen the number of projected infections, hospitalizations, and deaths? As much as I love my mornings at the beach, it would be horrible to complain about beach access when hundreds of thousands of people in my country could die very soon. At least we’re still allowed to have outdoor exercise. (Some nations have banned that already). We can walk and bike in the sunshine. I can still get on the water, I just can’t go to the beach. None of my friends or family have died. My husband and I are still employed. My kids are safe. We have food. I should really be extremely thankful. There is no immunization or cure for this virus, there is only change of behavior. I can only avoid trips to indoor spaces, avoid stores, and keep my family away from others. We’re all experiencing some sort of disruption in our lives. Let’s hope we flatten the curve sooner rather than later. This photo popped up on my Facebook memories the other day. I always appreciated my morning paddles and never took them for granted. I felt so lucky every time. I hope that you all are staying safe and finding things to be thankful for. ✌🏾❤️ #Aloha #flattenthecurve #weareallinthistogether #perspective #thankful #smile #breathe #thankyounurses #thankyoudoctors

On Friday the City of Hollywood posted information to their website regarding recreational activities, i.e. what's opening and what -besides the public beach- is STILL closed. Here is the updated info as of today, Monday the 11th.
Like it or not, it's what's permissible, even if not optimal for keeping residents content, if not happy.
My emphasis below in red.

Limited Reopening of Broadwalk and Additional City Parks and Recreational Facilities Wednesday, May 13th

Select City Parks and Recreational Facilities Now Open

In the continuing effort to protect the safety and well-being of our community, those visiting parks and recreational facilities must follow the guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Florida Department of Health, including wearing facial covering and social distancing. Detailed information on those restrictions can be found here.

City-operated parks and recreational facilities will remain open contingent upon visitors’ compliance with these recommended guidelines.
Provided the data continues with a downward trend, and we have compliance with social distancing and capacity restrictions related to existing park/recreational facility re-openings that started on Wednesday, May 6th, another phase is set for Wednesday, May 13th that may include the Broadwalk.

Parks Currently Open for Passive Activities

The following parks are open for passive activities only. Passive activities include walking, biking, running and individual enjoyment of the natural surroundings. No courts or playgrounds are open at this time.

ArtsPark at Young Circle - 1 Young Circle

Jefferson Park - 1501 Jefferson Street
Joe DiMaggio Park - 1001 Three Island Boulevard

Holland Park - 801 Johnson Street

Boat ramps open for rowing boats, canoes, kayaks or stand-up paddle boards only.

Ramp hours: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

(If the parking areas reach capacity, the ramps may be closed.)

(Note: No other areas of Holland Park will be open on Wednesday the 13th, like the Observation Tower, one of my favorite places in all of South Florida.

It's a great place for taking photos that capture the wide variety of people, Stand Up Paddle Boards, kayaks, boats and yachts that one can see, to say nothing of the beautiful variety of shades of blue and green water under sunny skies on the Intracoastal and North Lake.

Without getting too far ahead of my story, with more details to come in the coming weeks, once that Observation Tower opens again, don't be surprised to see me over there a lot more frequently than I've been the past year. And this time with some... yes, models.

Hmmm... a mystery!
Stay tuned!!!)

Do you remember that time I was at the beach 🌴☀️, either down here in South Florida or out in California, and a drop-dead beautiful woman in a bikini was there but I didn't see her because her bikini was camouflage?
Nope!
Me either.
