Justine Ezarik, a.k.a. iJustine, modern-day Digital Renaissance Woman and well-known YouTube Partner, back from CES, is in Miami for NATPE and checking-out the South Florida scene.

iJustine video: we in miami, trick. January 29, 2012.
http://youtu.be/gPQFUzahJEM

I originally meant to post the two videos -below- of lovely multi-tasker Justine about three months ago, back when she was visiting Norway and taking some awesome photos and videos of that beautiful country that's been the sad subject of so many posts of mine here since the massacre in Utøyaand home to so many friends, talented musicians -and, let's be honest, very beautiful women.

Plus, in case you missed it, Justine finally explained, to those who didn't know, what the reality of the Swedish Fish situation was. So there's that!

Curiously enough, that video of Justine and her Norwegian tech friends doing the glacier trek was one of the things that I had waiting for me in my YouTube inbox one night three months ago, when I'd  come home from spending a few hours with my Dad when he wasn't doing very well after he'd taken a fall earlier in the afternoon at the Hollywood ALF he's living at up the street. I'd had to jump into the gridlocked traffic on US-1 and rush up US-1 to get him and then head south to the Mt. Sinai ER in Aventura, with a large and disconcerting gash above his right eye.
Right where he had had surgery back in 1973 after he was the innocent victim in a car accident in North Miami Beach, while I was in Junior High School.

When I finally got home and flipped on my computer and the TV, with Jimmy Kimmel
about mid-way thru his monologue, I was both physically exhausted and emotionally distraught, and driving home I'd once again been mentally debating my idea of whether or not my visiting Sweden and Iceland soon for two weeks to just get away from here for a while and clear my head is such a great idea.
Something I've mentioned a time or two here before.

But as she has so many times before, especially the rough last year-and-a-half, with all of its upsetting ups-and-downs concerning my Dad's health, Justine made me laugh and smile when I really needed it... so there's that.
She's Pittsburgh thru-and-thru!

Something my Steubenville-born dad would surely appreciate if he only fully comprehended the whole Influencer scene.

Months after I'd originally planned on doing so, I'm going to be over on South Beach Monday afternoon to take some photos and shoot some video of the space on Lincoln Road that was supposed to be the new H&M store many months ago, but which is, well, STILL not open.

I'm going to try to get some straight answers from some responsible people as to when that soon-to-be cash cow store is going to be a reality, but if by chance I run into Justine, with her camera in tow, well, that sleuthing of mine may well have to wait until another time.

Even though I'm NOT a fan of reality shows anymore, per se, since the only one I consistently watch is CBS's The Amazing Race, Justine is definitely someone whose quirky personal adventures, misadventures and hijinks I would watch on the small tube.
Yes, smarts, savvy and personality still counts for a lot with me, and Justine has enough personality for any two women.
Take that as a hint, NATPE programming types looking for new ideas.

Yes, there's a Justine for every demographic!

A head's-up for those of you with YouTube Channels, esp. those of you who DON'T receive anywhere near the volume of visits that Justine gets.
Which is to say, all of you.
And me!

After originally planning on posting it over Christmas week but not being able to do so for reasons that some of you know about, in the next day or so I'll be posting the fascinating and instructive video of ABC News' 20/20 program from September called "YouTube Generation" that I've already spoken to some of you about via email.
I'll also post some of my pithy observations about it.

YouTube fame straight from the heart of Uppsala: 'Cottage Cheese Girls' channel Robyn's "Tell Your Girlfriend" with a clever hook

finga161 video: from SVT's Gomorron Sverige (Long version of song)

YouTube fame straight from the heart of Uppsala: 'Cottage Cheese Girls' channel Robyn's "Tell Your Girlfriend" with a clever hook

SVT video: Kesotjejerna gör succé (Cottage Cheese Girls Succeed)
SVT Uppland reporter Bernt Hermerle describes the tale of how one ad hoc decision -to turn on a video-cam- during an otherwise boring Wednesday night led to YouTube fame and international media attention for AMANDA WIKSTRÖM, PETRA BROHÄLL and EBBA LOVISA ANDERSSON.

I originally saw them sing on Thursday when I found myself on SVT's website looking for something else entirely.
Not finding what I was looking for, I clicked on some of the recent news videos, in this case, Wednesday's edition of Sverige Idag (Sweden Today).
After watching it for a bit I started fast-forwarding and eventually got to the last segment.
And then at the 22:04 mark, I saw something that I was completely unprepared for.
For about 45 seconds I was dumb-struck

Three talented and clever women from an Uppsala band called Erato had turned their boredom one night into a YouTube phenomena... a phenomena that I had heard nothing about, which is strange.
I mean, how many Swedish YouTube sensations can there be at any one time, right? Especially, a capella?

On Friday morning, I saw that Damian over at his very popular blog, SwedishStereo, had also posted something about the girls which I completely agree with: http://swedishstereo.blogspot.com/2011/10/erato-call-your-girlfriend.html

I'd actually received his post Thursday, but literally as I pulled his post up, I got a surprise phone call from someone with a great political tip I need to follow-up on, so... this post is at least 24 hours late.

The original caught LIVE...

More video mis-adventures of our new pal, Mischievous Little Swedish Pony, giving the officials at Falsterbo the slip and the crowds a LOT of laughs

hoppyryttarna's video: Shettisen ville inte bli fångade på Falsterbo Horse show 2011,

More video mis-adventures of our new pal, Mischievous Little Swedish Pony, giving the officials at Falsterbo 'the slip' and the crowds a LOT of well-deserved laughs.
Yes, Mischievous Little Swedish Pony may be #7 in your program but he's number-one in your hearts.

On Wednesday, July 27th, I first brought you the tale of the little black pony in Sweden that just didn't find running around in circles quite so amusing, so, thinking outside-the-box, he decided to ad lib and go 'rogue' -and change a pony race into a game of who can catch the pony.

In a post I titled, My Mischievous Little Swedish Pony: Yes, ponies are still cute & funny, esp. when adults are running after them; Patrik Kittel; Eva Skemm,
I explained what happened at the 2011 Falsterbo Horse Show earlier this month.

If you missed it the first time, here below is the video that actually drew my attention to this pony and sets-up the video up at the top of this post.
From the looks of things, the newest video seems to start more-or-less at turn number three in the large jumping area, where moments before, another rider-less pony, the grey one, had forced another rider and pony towards the wall.
Therefore, what the new video shows is what was not shown about the black pony when presitstommy kept their camera on the leader: amusing the large crowd.

presitstommy video: Falsterbo Horse Show 2011, ponnygaloppen!

Since Wednesday I've learned the perfectly reasonable explanation for why they stopped following the headstrong black pony just when it was getting interesting: it was actually
presitstommy's daughter who was the leader and who eventually won the race!

I knew there just had to be more video somewhere on YouTube of this impetuous little pony giving the crowd something to cheer and laugh about, even as he embarrassed one volunteer and track official after another who tried to catch him.
Seek and ye shall find... hoppryttarna to the rescue!

And as famed radio icon Paul Harvey said so many thousands of times, "Now you know the rest of the story."

Wow! Sofia in Umeå -a.k.a. Hia80- has four must-see home videos of Robyn performing at Skellefteå 2011 last Friday

Robyn - With every heartbeat - LIVE at Skellefteå 2011, July 1, 2011

Robyn, Sveriges popdrottning! (Robyn, Sweden's pop queen!)
Now THAT'S charisma!

Judging by the evidence, Sofia from up in Umeå looks to have not only scored some very good seats for Robyn's show last Friday in Stieg Larsson's neck of the woods in Skellefteå -near the front of the stage, no less- but she also kindly thought of all the Robyn fans out there in the blogosphere who craved a new video fix of this energetic dynamo, and Sofia has delivered big time.
All the customary moves we've come to expect from Robyn were there, too: the windmill arms, the shadow-boxing, the moon walking...

Sofia has very good audio and video quality, especially considering that she was clearly standing in an enthusiastic crowd of people going nuts.

Sofia's video reminds me of the amazing videos of the crowds at the Paramore concerts in STKHM that I alluded to last October here on the blog, when I compared and contrasted music lovers' lightning-like ability to use technology and share information/video thru YouTube, while the Miami Herald continued insulting their readers by playing second-rate Pony Express, and was NOT even able to get the score or game story for the first game of the 2010 World Series in the Broward edition of the paper the day after the game.
This, even though The New York Times that was printed in Fort Lauderdale and sold at the same places in Broward as the Herald had two pages of games coverage, plus photos.

That November 27th, 2010 post of mine was titled, How a video of Paramore in Stockholm and Razorlight at the Cuckoo Club, London -Friday night- proves the Miami Herald is too damn slow. Iceberg dead ahead!

My previous six posts on Robyn the past year are right here in chronological order:

Obviously, what she shot is slightly different than the film quality that you all got used to in my very popular post a few weeks back on Robyn, here, with SVT's amazing video of Robyn's concert in Copenhagen last year and the fascinating and amusing behind-the-scenes documentary at her concert in Stockholm, but it's still damn impressive nonetheless.

Now if only everyone did as good a job as Sofia of not only keeping their cool in the heat of the moment at a Robyn concert and keeping the focus on her -and largely avoiding everyone's hands up in the air!- and NOT blurting out things that get captured on film and distract from what's going on.

Great job, Sofia!
Two big thumbs up from South Florida! :-)

By the way, Sofia is also the very same person who three years ago uploaded the video of Frida Öhrn on SVT's Så ska det låta singing her version of the Dolly Parton classic "Jolene" that just knocked me out. http://youtu.be/aPYBGa_PsLo
Until Friday night when I was preparing this post, I'd completely forgotten that she was the one whose quick thinking was appreciated by so many, including yours truly, SO many miles away.

While crime and flash mobs roil Chicago-area residents, City Hall, Police, Tourism & Business Establishment act like ostriches. Sounds familiar!

View more videos at: http://nbcchicago.com.

WMAQ-TV (Chicago) video: Woman Believes Beach Violence Covered Up. City officials say incidents handled promptly.

Hard as it is to believe, all indications are that the City of Chicago and the Chicago downtown business establishment are STILL trying to deny what so many thousands of Chicago-area residents have seen LIVE over the past few weeks, and what tens of thousands more Americans have now seen via posted videos on YouTube, thanks to quick-thinking witnesses.
It's indicative of many troubling things, not least, a giant fundamental govt. dis-connect to reality.

WMAQ-TV (Chicago) video: The Talk: The Real Story Behind the Beach Closure.
Amy Schwartz talks with host Marion Brooks.

The situation in Chicagoland and how poorly it's been handled from the beginning, months before Rahm Emauel was elected mayor, gives you some real insight into how a similar situation down here in South Florida would likely be handled, where much-smaller city governments already have their heads firmly in the ground like ostriches, about what everyone in their own towns (plus visitors) can already readily see for themselves 24/7 about the general state of govt. incompetence, longstanding corruption and the lack of sufficient and properly-trained law enforcement in places where it can make a positive difference.
This despite the fact that Police & Fire personnel costs make up the clear majority of local cities' budgets.

WLS-7 TV (Chicago) video: Security stepped up for Taste of Chicago

Here where I live in South Florida, in the SE corner of Broward County, as I've often commented with exasperation on this blog, the Hallandale Beach Police Dept. STILL does NOT regularly patrol the actual public beach, even on crowded, three-day holiday weekends.
Like what's coming up in a few days...

But if you ask me, I can tell you exactly where I've watched them sit in their patrol cars on the road for 5-10 minutes with their A/C going when they have shown up to "investigate."
Or, later, where they stand in the shade (of The Beach Club) when they do actually get out of the patrol car -to smoke or check-out the female 'scenery'.
That's many things, but it's NOT the kind of serious patrolling HB taxpayers have a right to expect at one of the main public areas in the city.

Is it true that there are more HBPD police cars than there are actual HB police officers and administrators, and if so, why are there seemingly DOZENS of police cars that NEVER EVER move from the HB City Hall parking lot, no matter what time of the day you happen upon them?

Some answers to these questions may well be forthcoming, but I don't think I'm ruining the suspense when I tell you that I don't think you'll like the facts I have to share with you on this matter.

It's just more of the same inexplicable, inefficient, wasteful and status quo mentality we deal with here on an everyday basis.

Mendacious Peter Deutsch & Ben Gamla Charter get caught red-handed on YouTube and pull their video before more people can see the truth for themselves

Below, for your edification, is a copy of an email that I sent out just before midnight to some South Florida reporters, columnists and editors for their perusal Wednesday morning in their office, while I'm over at the Hallandale Beach City Commission meeting.

Given what I have written here on the blog in the past on the subject of former Congressman Peter Deutsch's proposed Ben Gamla Charter School in Hallandale Beach -which I have strongly opposed from the very beginning- this post almost writes itself, but this time, a new development has emerged since I last wrote about the subject.
A shoe has dropped.

An embarrassing, smelly mess of a shoe that has left fingerprints for us to examine.

It shows Peter Deutsch for what he truly is, and typically -and I could hardly have dreamed this next part up!- his clumsiness in attempting to erase the truth has only drawn more attention to his impudent mendacity and gall.

Peter Deutsch being Peter Deutsch.

-----

Lost in Translation.

That's an excellent name for the well-thought out and fact-filled essay below penned by
www.savehallandale.wordpress.com that I decided to share with you tonight, on the chance you haven't already received it.

It's point is clear and one that I have often written myself, namely that sometimes, things are
EXACTLY what they seem.

In this specific case, it's nice of
Peter Deutsch & Co. to be so obvious about his mendacity and actually use YouTube to spread his message of... well, it's NOT exactly a celebration of diversity in Hallandale Beach and the actual school kids who already live HERE, is it?

No,
Peter Deutsch & Co. are exactly whom I and the other concerned citizens of this city thought they were when he personally said over a year ago -at one of HB Comm. Keith London's monthly Resident Forum meetings with HB citizens- that there was absolutely nothing that anyone in this city could do to stop him from getting what HE wanted. No citizen, no elected official -NOBODY.

This latest piece of the puzzle described so accurately by savehallandale seems like what some people with old-fashioned notions of serious journalism actually call NEWS.
I'm one of them.

It would be nice for a change to actually see this story treated in the serious fashion that it has long deserved, say, sometime before that HB City Commission meeting in two weeks, on the 18th, at 6 p.m.

But perhaps you think differently.

I guess we'll all see what South Florida media outlets really think is news.

Or not.

In any case, regardless of what you do, this will be the last time you hear from me on the unpopular
Ben Gamla Charter School, a development proposal that any reasonable person can see doesn't just ignore the genuine needs of school kids in THIS city, but threatens to turn a largely single-family neighborhood in NE HB into a perpetual parking lot, courtesy of parents who live in distant Broward and Miami-Dade cities that are NOT named Hallandale Beach.

Warning! Don't upgrade to Firefox Mozilla 4.0 or you'll regret it -it's bad news!; YouTube Video Speed History

Warning! Don't upgrade to Firefox Mozilla 4.0 or you'll regret it -it's bad news!

My home computer has NEVER 'hanged' as frequently and for as long as it has since I downloaded the new version of Firefox Mozilla 4.0 on Sunday, upgrading from 3.6.15, which is one of the reasons that there have been no posts here since then.

Lest you forget, my computer crashed a LOT on Google Chrome two years ago, which is why I migrated to Firefox Mozilla in the first place. Frankly, in 2008, I got tired of resorting to simply yanking my computer's electrical cord out of its surge suppressor and starting over again after Chrome CONSTANTLY froze-up, and Google said they couldn't fix the problem.

Guess what, I DON'T drive cars that don't already have a reverse gear, working windshield wipers and headlights, because sometimes, they are needed, even when the car is used perfectly.
That's the same reason that I no longer use a web browser
that the geniuses behind it can't or won't fix, preferring instead to simply shrug their shoulders and say that it's my problem when it doesn't work when used properly.
Sorry, I'm old-fashioned that way.

Chrome
will have to be perfect for me to ever go to it again.

Yes, I know I can use the computer Restore function but the point is why is something being released to the public that is so problematic?

I
mentioned the problem in an aside in an email earlier this afternoon about another subject. Sent, I should add, from somewhere other than my home computer, where this blog is cobbled together, two miles west of the Atlantic Ocean -and far-too-close to Hallandale Beach City Hall.
I've been having constant computer problems since Sunday night when I updated my Firefox Mozilla, i.e. lots more of "frozen" screens.
I pay for AT&T DSL Lite 6.0 but my computer is constantly operating at roughly between 3.7 and 4.2, and hence, a source of great frustration, esp. when AT&T customer service tells me that 6.0 is not a guarantee.
Thanks for telling me that after I signed-up!
An international jet-set friend commiserated.
glad to hear I'm not the only one having problems w Firefox...I watch Korean dramas on it, and it's been spotty...not downloading properly, freezing, etc.
Don't say you weren't warned.

To get a real gauge of what your computer speed is, as opposed to those dopey "speed tests" you see advertised, go to YouTube as I did below.

http://www.google.com/support/youtube/bin/answer.py?answer=174122

Right-click a
YouTube video you like and select "Take speed test."

It will give you a color-coded graph of your speed and how that compares to others with that ISP, your area, your state, your country and globally.

I assume this YouTube test will work as well for my friends and readers at distant posts in the far-flung Hallandale Beach Blog universe as it does for me here in Hallandale Beach,
whether it's:

a.) my fashion-forward
friends in Sweden with non-fashion/media jobs, who keep the Stockholm nightclubs busy at night even while studiously avoiding Stureplan's omnipresent photographers
http://stureplan.se/ -so they don't get linked by mistake to the free-spending credit card crowd, i.e. the "Brats"- or,

b.) my tech savvy and political savant friends in London and Notting Hill
, who keep sending me great material to read and ponder, both insightful and humorous.

The latter are constantly encouraging me to do whatever is necessary to come over next year for the London Olympics.

L
ike I need any encouragement for that!

Let me know if you try it and it doesn't work in your area, and I will mention that in a future blog post, but make sure you try it three times over two days before emailing me your thumbs down evaluation.

I'm sure the folks at
YouTube would be interested, too, since they want everyone to be able to see the videos -and the ads.

Below, the chart that tells me that my home computer speed is not world-class -or Olympian.
Me and my digital divide!

Forgot to mention above that Stureplan.se is one of those great media platforms for bloggers like the ones that I referenced back on February 21st, like Spotlife.se http://hallandalebeachblog.blogspot.com/2011/02/thoughts-re-mondays-nyt-article-blogs.html that South Florida has nothing like, despite how much everyone keeps telling Bridget Carey of the Herald how sophisticated this area is.
Nope.

The Herald's longstanding inability to leverage their power and well-known name into a great platform for thoughtful bloggers with something original to say -and that people are interested in- is proof of that.

-----
April 2011 postscript:
One of the unfortunate aspects of this story with Firefox Mozilla 4.0 was that after upgrading, I could no longer listen to the BBC Radio streaming feed, and specifically, 5live,
http://www.bbc.co.uk/5live/, which I generally listen to a few hours a day.
It was finito.

Even after I reversed course and went back to the previous Mozilla I was using, I could no longer hear the BBC, so I'm now forced to use Internet Explorer.

In fact, the small speaker icon no longer appeared on-screen on the radio player pop-up as it had previously after
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/bbc_radio_five_live

On April 4th, after trying my best to get this resolved, I sent out an email to IT-brainy friends titled: It's official: a week of using Firefox Mozilla for BBC Radio equals no sound for programs/programmes, Back to using fussy ol' Windows Explorer for Beeb!

The management geniuses at BBC Radio have no clue what's going on, witness this at their r comments page for the No Sound problem forum.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbiplayer/NF7331803?thread=8141049

The idea that people that don't have the problem themselves have so much time on their hands to actually write-in to the website to chastise other listeners they don't know and make them sound like audio hypochondriacs, says a lot about something, I'm just not sure what precisely.

City of Hollywood gives you chance to socialize/hobnob/people watch and shred your inhibitions -along with your old docs on Saturday at City Hall

Above, Hollywood City Hall, looking west from the half-circle in front of the Hollywood branch of the Broward County library. June 2, 2008 photo by South Beach Hoosier.
(When you look up Hollywood City Hall on Google Images, my photo is the first one you see.
And the third!)

Finally, one of those shredding parties you've heard about and seen videos of at odd hours of the night on YouTube or one of the TV cable nets when you couldn't fall asleep, but never actually knew about beforehand, so you always missed out.
Well, today's your lucky day, because now you know!

Below, the press release just coming over the Hallandale Beach Blog transom from Hollywood City Hall about Saturday's event in their parking lot

It's been my own experience that local TV stations around the country love these events almost as much as the people with boxes and boxes of docs to shred, since it often provides a fascinating look at what people -and Americans in particular- hang on to (or hoard) until there's finally a time to cast it off.

Good Riddance Day - New York Post

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1jhSEICf-k

Of course, IF there was a night-time bonfire and a nearby barbecue, say, for some local charity, now THAT would be a great double-feature!

Maybe that's what we'll do in Hallandale Beach one day in the future between HB City Hall and the Cultural Center, when the day finally arrives that the city employees running City Hall are actually responsive to citizen taxpayers and have their best interests at heart, something that's definitely NOT the case today.

And when that happens, the first thing to be burned at the charity bonfire would have to be -to steal the thunder from my friend Rob, a local business owner on the city's beleaguered Fashion Row- the city's overly-large code compliance book, which is full of things that nobody alive in the city understands, which even the city's own professional staff was forced to admit at a public meeting recently held at Dekka.

And why does the City of Hallandale Beach continue to be one of THE biggest violators of its own code book in the city, and also NOT follow many existing common sense state laws and statutes?

The evidence for those violations are right in front of you -everywhere- if you just open your eyes, and yet it goes on day-after-day, month-after-month, year-after-year, because HB City Hall consciously chooses to ignore the laws they don't like.

So what does Red Tape sound like or smell like when it's being either shredded or burned?
Probably chicken!

Shredding Saturday: Free Shredding to Help Protect Your Identity

Saturday, February 5, 2011

HOLLYWOOD, FL - The City of Hollywood's Office of the City Clerk, Records and Archives Division in partnership with International Data Depository (IDD) is sponsoring a free opportunity for businesses and residents to shred the records and documents they no longer need. On Saturday, February 5, 2011 from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., IDD will bring its commercial shredding truck to the parking lot at Hollywood City Hall, 2600 Hollywood Boulevard.

By properly disposing of your personal and business records, you can reduce your risk of becoming a victim of identity theft. Criminals often engage in "dumpster diving"-going through a person's garbage in search of copies of checks, credit card statements, bank statements or other records they can use to gain access to your accounts and in the most serious cases, assume your identity. According to a report by TIME magazine online, Florida has the nation's highest rate of identity theft (122.3 reports per 100,000 people). Identity theft is a growing crime that can affect just about anyone, regardless of how careful you think you are. "Our objective is to help prevent identity theft within the South Florida community and promote the importance of shredding," says Jorge Bohorquez of IDD.

Aside from the loss of money, identity theft costs its victims time and can damage their credit. Bring those old checks, credit card statements or other personal and business records that put you at risk to the City's Shredding Saturday event this weekend.

For event information, please contact the Records and Archives Division at 954.921. 3545.
